Check out SC head Coach Will Muschamp talking Tigers as he discusses how the Tigers recent success on the football field affects the state of SC and the Rivalry.
Clemson, which is 61-9 overall over the last five seasons, has indeed lost just two home games during that span -- a 2013 loss to Florida State and a 2016 loss to Pittsburgh in the 10th game of the Tigers' second national championship season.
Despite the Gamecocks having lost four consecutive games against Clemson, including two since he took over as coach prior to the 2016 season, Muschamp -- whose team is coming off a 9-4 season that ranks as the program's best since 2013 -- considers Clemson's recent success a positive.
“I think it’s good for our state, I don’t think there’s any question about that,” Muschamp said. “I’ve got tremendous respect for Coach Swinney and the job that they’ve done at Clemson.
“Regardless of whether it’s your rival or not, you do respect good ball, you do respect good coaching, you do respect good players. That’s always been my take on things whether it’s your rival or not your rival. But there’s no question it’s good for our state.”
By the same token, Muschamp wants to see his program close the gap in a rivalry that has seen Clemson outscore the Gamecocks 90-17 over the past two years and 162-66 during the four-game losing streak.
“Ain’t no doubt about it – we need to make it more of a rivalry,” Muschamp said. “There’s no question we need to do a better job on our side.
“Coach Spurrier beat him five times in a row, so he could say whatever he wanted to. As a matter of fact, Coach Spurrier could say whatever he wanted to no matter what.”
