Clemson or Ohio State - Whats a 4-star WR Supposed to Do

4-star WR Troy Stellato out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has narrowed his college choices to two schools that met in the College Football Playoffs last season: Clemson and Ohio State. Both schools claim to be “WRU” and both schools have put some pretty good WRs into the NFL. So is that particular “battle” going to make a difference to Stellato? Probably not. Stellato is not one of those 6-4 220 WR types that is going to blow you away with his physical size. He did, however, run a 4.42 at the Opening in Miami. He will be playing in the January 2021 Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii. As a junior, Stellato didn’t have eye-popping stats at Cardinal Gibbons high school. He had 42 catches for 707 yards and 9 touchdowns. So what does Clemson and Ohio State see in this 6-0 170 WR? He is a baller. He is in the mold of Adam Humphries (5-11 190), Hunter Renfrow (5-10 185), and current WR coach Tyler Grisham (5-11 185). The recruiter of record for Stellato was Jeff Scott. Clemson first offered in October 2019, and he paid an unofficial visit to Death Valley in November of the same year. Meanwhile, Clemson wins another ACC Championship, and goes to the College Playoffs. USF came calling for Coach Scott and Scott was named as the new head coach. Exit Coach Scott as recruiter of record, enter new WR Coach Tyler Grisham. Grisham spent the last three years as an offensive analyst and was the interim WR coach as the Tigers prepared for the CFP. Grisham hit the ground running and getting Stellato back on campus with his dad and girlfriend in March could go a long way in getting this quick WR to decide for Clemson.
Depth charts are always a point of contention when looking at a school. Clemson will lose Justyn Ross and Amari Rodgers next year from a loaded position. Returning for the 2021 season will be Frank Ladson, Joe Ngata, E.J. Williams, Robbie Spector, and Ajou Ajou, as well has a handful of walk-ons. In the 2021 class, Clemson already has two top WR’s scheduled to come in: #7 WR Beaux Collins and #23 WR Dacari Collins, both around 6-4 195. Stellato would fit in nicely as a slot receiver.
Looking at the Ohio State depth chart, going into the 2021 season, they will lose no one. Not only are they bringing the current WRs back, as well as the #1 WR in the 2020 class, the buckeyes already have commitments from the 4th and 11th ranked WRs in the 2021 class. Both schools after Stellato’s signature are loaded at the wide receiver position. He won’t go wrong with either school. How much emphasis will be put in the quarterback position? Justin Fields is back for his junior season and will more than likely be gone before Stellato even arrives. Clemson, on the other hand, will have the #1 quarterback from the 2020 class chomping at the bit to take his place as the starting quarterback, should Trevor Lawrence depart for the pros. Most think that’s a foregone conclusion.
Stellato is scheduled to visit Ohio State in June. Due to the virus, we don’t know when these athletes are going to get to come back on campus. Official and unofficial visits are where decisions are made. This coronavirus put a screeching halt to these visits. Take heart.
